Do I need a logo? Small business 101

What is a logo?

A logo is a symbol that represents a business or organization. You probably see a hundred or more every day without even realizing it and could likely identify dozens without really trying. Some suggest their product or service almost subliminally, some (but not all) contain the company name, and others seem random.

The logos below are so embedded in our society that you can almost certainly name all six of these companies - even though their names are not actually in the logos.

Where would I use it?

Your logo is one of the many ways you can establish a brand and it's something you can and should use on your business cards, website, emails, invoices, receipts - anywhere you'd use your business name. Just because you're not Apple or FedEx doesn't mean you don't need one!

Do I really need one?

Many entrepreneurs who provide a service feel like a logo is superfluous - it's just me, they say. Can't I just use my face as my logo? And although it's great to get your face out there, think about all the places you can use a logo - letterhead, stickers, pens, refrigerator magnets, banners, t-shirts, etc. If you want your face blown up and on a t-shirt, or miniaturized for a pen, go for it, but a lot of people might prefer a graphic design.

Can't I worry about it later?

It makes more sense to set that logo up now, at the very beginning, than to add it later on. This kind of brand consistency is all part of being a legitimate, professional business, and no longer something you run out of the spare room on the weekends.

Not that there's anything wrong with the spare room and weekends, but that's not the image you want to present to the world.

Where does a website editor fit in?

There are a lot of decisions to make when creating or overhauling your business website (What about a logo? How about a tagline? Should I have a blog?). As a website editor, I can help you identify and address most of them.
